Help for a friend

Howdy everyone. This is my first post here and I'm looking for help for a friend. I am reasonably familiar with pistols, but quickly learned that I know nothing about Lugers. I've searched and read a number of posts, but quickly learned that I don't know enough terminology to get very far.

So, I snapped a couple of photos and will simply issue a plea for help. This pistol belongs to a friend who is passing it to his children but wanted to know a bit about it.

I apologize for the quality of the photos, it's the best I could do on short order. Please let me know if I need additional photos.

The gun is probably a good shooter. I'm seeing a commercial Luger, probably cold blued and with aftermarket grips. Stock lug has probably been ground off. Made in the 1920's would be my guess. Is it 9mm or .30 cal?
Anything else you need?

I think it's a .30 cal. I was surprised with the three digit SN. Is that rare at all?

No..not really. Luger were made with repeating serial numbers. Lets say they started with 1 and went to 9,999 then started over. 3 digits would be relatively rare as most end up with 4 but rarity of anything on your pistol is a moot point because it's been hard buffed and reblued. Your pistol has lost any collector status and is now a shooter. Not that it had much to start with as .30 commercials in top condition are $12-1400. This pistol shown is perhaps..$400-500 tops IMO. Without a magazine? $400 for sure. Even $400 would depend on numbers and condition of the bore, function etc. It appear that the stock lug has been ground off...

I agree with most of the above info. It's difficult to tell from your photo, if the suffix letter is a k or an n. This is part of the luger's serial number, so with the suffix letter any number from 1 to 9999 could be correct. TH

If a number 2 pencil fits down the barrel it is a 9MM.

No, actually, they are less desirable than a 9mm due to the cost and availability of ammo. They, are, however, very accurate and a pleasure to shoot.
