1906 AE Mag

I was just asked how many numbers should be on mag of a 1906 AE Luger. I think the answer is none. I have three such Lugers and two have mags not marked and one has Germany stamped into the wood. Is my asnwer right and what guide lines are there? Are all civilian mags not numbered?

Richard,

You are essentially correct. 1900-1906 Lugers definitely have unmarked mag bases. Alphabet Commercials (four-digit/letter suffix) made between 1922-1929 are commonly accepted to have GERMANY stamped bases, but this may not be accurate and is something I would like to track down. It has been suggested that magazines so marked have come into this country as spares.

Since Commercial mags are by and large unmarked, it is almost impossible to determine whether or not any given magazine originates with any given gun in order to do any sort of correlative study.

1908/1914/20DWM (5-digit serial# guns) may have blank bases as well. There are 5-digit numbered magazines, it is suspected that these are associated with Police or Commercial/Military variations.

There is one exception. 1902-1906 Lugers in 9mm were stamped Cal 9m/m lengthwise on the base.

Since I have your attention...I am assembling a database of early commercial (1900 through the end of the 5-digit series) Lugers, and would like to add yours to the list. Could you tell me full serial number (no xx, please); type (AE in your case?); proof marks (and which ones) or not; presence or absence of GERMANY export mark; caliber 9mm or .30; Loaded or Geladen on the extractor. If you prefer not to do this in public, please feel free to email me [email protected] .

I got the same question asked, and I gave the same answer...none. Commercial magazines are not numbered.

1906 AE 35505 German on receiver, no proofs. .30 ca. extractor Loaded.
1906 Commercial 23494, Crown B and Crown C on receiver, barrel has
Crown B, C and G, no import mark.. .30 cal. extractor Gelanden.
1906 AE 48858, Crown B and C on receiver and barrel Crown B, C, and
G,and has Germany import on receiver. .30 cal. extractor Loaded
1906 AE 36377, no proofs, Germany import mark, .30 cal., extractor Loaded
1908 59838, Crown N on receiver and barrel, no import mark, 9mm
extractor Geladen
1906 AE 26971, no proofs, Germany import mark, 9mm, extractor Loaded

The 1908 59838 has GESICHERT, the other just the milled white steel mark.

Thanks much for all the good info, its all new to my database.

My intent in the long run is to post some observations and tentative conclusions from the data, and then make the database itself generally available. The process is being held up because I am trying to track down some associated material with a large database I was given.

I will not be retaining the specific information of which gun information came from what source.
