Re: Portugueser Luger
The proof is correct, but the only ones I have seen either have Army (M2) Navy crest or the GNR marking. The WW2 byfs are 9mm and I believe have standard german markings. David. Maybe someone with more experience with these may have more info. David

Re: more info
Do the numbers match on this pistol the barrel lenght is incorrect. Barrel lenght should be 4 and 3/4 inches.
If the upper unit is not numbered or have different numbers you may have a portuguese frame with 30 cal commercial upper unit. .David. |

Welcome to the forum Walt...
Please take a moment to create a profile, and to read the Forum Decorum under general information to give you a grasp of the operation of the forum. All those with an interest in the Luger pistol are welcome here.
I am no expert on Portugese Lugers, but I tend to agree with David's assessment. Maybe someone a little more up to snuff on Portugese Lugers will chime in. Come back often... -J |

Re: more info
Hi David,
You're correct, my mistake, it's 4 3/4" barrel. All numbers match throughout. I've had this piece almost 30 years along with a couple of other Lugers, one of which is mis-matched. I thought the same thing about the crest. One Luger expert, whom I won't name, said the crest had been ground off. I've had several very good gunsmiths tell me that's non-sense, that there is no sign of it being scrubbed. Other wise it looks like a regular 1906 Portuguese Luger. Any other help would be appreciated. Walt |

Re: more info
Hi Walt,
Itâ??s actually fairly easy to tell if the crest has been ground off. Look at the front of the barrel extension where the barrel is screwed into the barrel extension. The front of the barrel extension should be round. If anything has been removed from the top of the barrel extension (the area we have been calling the â??chamberâ?) the top of the barrel extension will be flattened due to the removal of material. If in doubt, compare it to your other Lugers (assuming they are not 1920â??s production!). On a (very loosely) related subject, my shooter Artillery is a FrankenLuger (a Luger made up from parts scavenged from dead Lugers) and has the barrel extension from a Portuguese Luger. Iâ??ll attach a photo - you might want to compare the Portuguese proof/acceptance stamp on my Luger to those on your Luger. Hope this helps. Re: Welcome to the forum Walt...
Re: 1906 Portugese Lugers. I have owned a 1906 with M2 removed from the chamber. As I remember a bunch of Protugese Lugers were imported and for sale in SGN in the early 1960s Some had the M2 removed and were refinished. Seems the M2 was removed at time of refinish since Manual the second [dictator] was no longer in power and was of course in disfavor. Maybe I'm having a senior moment--but believe this is correct info.

Re: Welcome to the forum Walt...
Hi John,
Well I did buy this in the early 60s, but as I said there is no sign of the M2 being ground off and it definately has not been refinished. On of the gunsmiths who looked at it is a professional refinisher of Winchester rifles and he says it's the original finish. BTW the proof is as shown in your pic. Best regards, Walt |
