Help with 1916 mismatch?
Hello Guys
This is my first time on your forum. My brother-in-law called me with this info. on a luger he wants to sell me. Ser.# 20977, 1916 on chamber plus an L and a V with unknown mark under it. S/42 on toggle and the number 77. There is no letter under the serial # under the barrel but there are two crowns with RC under one and 2 under the other, these are on the front of the trigger guard. Walnut grips and aluminum unmatched mag. All other visible parts are numbered 77. What I don't get is the 77 on the toggle which is the wrong toggle for this gun. I hope to get better at this and will send pictures of my byf 41 luger on the next posting. Thanks |

Bill, This is a Mauser bolt in a DWM reciever. Purely a parts gun. Check to see that the pistol will fire before considering purchase. **** it with no cartridges in the room, drop a pencil down the barrel erasure first, point it at the cieling and pull the trigger. If it shoots the pencil it will at least fire with all the mismatched parts. This does not mean it is safe to fire with live ammo. $600 is about the going rate these days for shooters. Jerry Burney

Bill,
You have made me curious. The 5-digit serial number is characteristic of DWM commercial serial numbers, in fact the 209xx range is very specifically in the 1900 Bulgarian range. The frame as you describe has markings characteristic of Erfurt manufactured Lugers 1911-1918. Is the five-digit number repeated on the barrel, frame front, and left receiver? For that matter, what are the markings on the right receiver? How long is the barrel, is this gun 9mm or .30 Luger? --Dwight |

Dwight,
The barrel , front frame and left receiver all have the same serial number. I will have to check with the bro-in-law on what is on the right side. He did say that it was a 9mm. and that the barrel is four inches. In my very limited opinion it sounded like a parts gun to me. Bill |
