S/42 1937

I recently acquired this 1937 S/42 6902s
I noticed from Jan's list, that the pistols listed in my serial range are "strawed".
This one is not. I have looked at it closely and I am sure it has the original finish.
It was purchased from the estate of the Veteran that brought it back in 1945. I also have a copy of the bring back papers.
It is all matching including grips, but the magazine is not.

It might be instructive to have Forum members check their 1937 S/42's with serial numbers in the high 6800s and low 6900s series to see if this piece is a"maverick" piece or not.

What finish is on the breechblock pin, it appears fire blued??? An all salt blued Mauser should also have a salt blued pin there?? It might be just a hardened part that took a plum type color too during the salt bath. A couple of other things kind of stick out to me. Not much wear on the frame rails, the paint in the Gesichert looks a little more tan (WWI type) than an off white(Mauser type). Type 3 Army mag? A very nice looking Luger.

FWIW, my data shows that 1937 S/42 Lugers had strawed small parts up to about S/N 2300t.

I have 1937 Lugers on both sides of your serial number and they both have strawed small parts!

It's difficult to tell from your photo what you have!! The flash masks a lot of detail!!

Hi Doc, yup it's a "S"!!!

Nomadr, would you please take another photo. The one entitled "White Paint" is great, but can you take another showing the area above and back of the "White Paint" Photo showing the frame. My question is about the presence of a Mauser Hump!!!

This appears to be a different "duck". The flame blue pin, mentioned by Thor, and the serial number range indicates the pistol should have strawed small parts.

Nomadr, okay, thanks for the additional picture!

What we know:
1) The frame has a Mauser Hump
2) The serial number, 6902s, is just inside the low number for the beginning of the Mauser Hump Frame production change.
3) The cross pin between the breech block and mid Toggle Link is Fire Blued.

What I think we know:
1) The appearance of the patina on the back grip strap, seems to indicate the frame is rust blued
2) I believe the serial number on the barrel shows a halo. This would indicate the barrel is rust blued.

What you need to verify:
1) Check the internal surfaces of the frame for coloration. These surfaces should be "In the White" or not blued. This is the "tell" for a rust blued frame.

What I can conclude:
1) If the frame and receiver are rust blued and
2) The serial number is in the early range, then

THE SMALL PARTS SHOULD BE STRAWED!!!!

Since they are not, the small parts must have been blued sometime after 1937. But I don't have a clue who did the dastardly deed!! I can only speculate on reasons for the small parts being blue instead of straw!!

Here are some more pics of the inside.
I know anything is possible, but it looks like this Luger was untouched!
I purchased it directly from the Vet's family... and if it was refinished, it would have to been before 1945?
Maybe sent back to the factory and re built?
Would there be a mark to indcate that?
