Default 1917 DWM Question

All of my matching WWI Lugers have grips numbered to the gun. Today I acquired a very nice 1917 DWM which is correct and matching in every respect. However, the grips are not numbered to the gun. They certainly appear to be original, but can they be correct without matching numbers?

Aaron; as a rule, some DWM grips are numbered and some aren"t. All of my Erfurts are numbered and only some of my DWM are numbered.

Thanks, Lonnie, I am now quite satisfied that the grips are original. Do you think the later manufactured WWI Lugers tended to dispense with numbering grips, or does it seem to have been a random omission to you?

Aaron; Erfurt did them all and DWM did some. I have 5 DWM and 3 are marked. 1917,1914, and 1917 Artillery.

Lonnie

PS: I believe Imperial Lugers will give you the same info.

Aaron,

Their can be no question that the numbering of DWM grips was not required of all weapons Perhaps military ???

My all matching 1906 AE has un numbered grips or marking of any type, and They have been on this Pistol for over 50 years that I know of and they looked 40+ years old when I bought it back in the late 1940's for $35.00 Too cheap to have replaced grips back then.

Aaron, Your grips are probably DWM commerical grips which were unnumbered but the original military grips should be numbered with the last 2 digits of serial number. Tom h

Viggo,

The question was, are the grips matching on a 1917 DWM Luger. Your 1906 AE Commercial has nothing to do with the Imperial WWI Lugers as they are in different catagories. A commercial Luger did not have the same requirements as the Army requirements.

From my experience, DWM Imperial WWI Lugers generally did have the last two digits on the inside of the grips, but in 1917 and 1918 some were issued with blank numbered grips.

If this is a Weimar rework with a 1917 date on it, then it is very probable that the grips were changed to a blank pair at the time of rework. Some used the original grips and some had replacements.
