Default 4 symbols on this 1900's rail?

Could you tell me what are those 4 symbols on this 1900's rail (s/n 13901)? The rightmost one looks like "0"... but the ones on the left are not digits. TIA

Looks like 4440 to me??? Not sure, but it could be the last four digits of a previous owners social security #.

Viewed pix again. 4440 makes sense to me.

Historically, was there any U.S. Police Department issued DWM 1900?

Mike was right. It's 4. It's old stamping, not knife engraving, so probably not someone's social security Might be original dealer's stock number or something. No clue.

To the left? Peppering.

4440 could be less exciting than those array of small "creatures" on military gun's receiver. But that does not mean we understand what it is. At least I have no clue. It's highly unlikely being added in its collector stage though.
