Search BYF and check out the BEAUTIFUL (dual tone?) 42-40.

Looks like a combination of Rust blue and Salt blue.

Anyone notice a problem with these two "matching mags"? Maybe they are correct but I don't see how. If you know please post your answer. Anxious to know. Jerry Burney

Jerry; good eye. There weren"t enough shadows to cover the M.

I believe it was the 34/06 Swiss that did come with the unusual combination of a rust blued frame and a salt blued barrel. The pistols were beautifully finished, and the difference in finishes makes a striking combination.

Johnny; have you ever heard of it in a military 42-40? It is BEAUTIFUL!! I have never even heard of one like this mentioned in any book, and I have read a lot of books.

The pistol on AA appears to have one of the receivers that turned red/purple during the salt blueing process. The color is probably due to incorrect temperature during blueing. The military Mauser would not have had a mixed finish such as the one I described on the 34/06.

I sure didn"t think so, but that frame sure looks like rust blue in the photo.

Hi Lonnie,

There should be NO combinations of salt and rust blue on these models. In 1937 there is a combination, but not in the 1940/42 models. If it is a combination, then it is not correct. This 1940/42 can have either a 122 code magazine or the blue rolled magazine. An interesting point on these 1940/42 Lugers is the size of the serial numbers on the receiver, they vary in size for moderate digits to a slightly larger size. The magazine serial number should be the same size as the right receiver serial numbers.

Obviously whoever "matched" this set of mags to this Luger is not a very good student of Luger serial numbers and markings... I guess the owner wanted as many markings as possible to match huh?

no suffix letter match and both mags have the "+" symbol...

Hi,

Again, the serial numbers on the magazine bottoms should be the same size as the serial numbers on the left receiver. Naturally the suffix should be the same on both and be exactly like the suffix on the frame, and only one should have a plus. The Eagle 63 or Eagle 83 should be on both bases, exactly the same, with the correct magazine for a 1938 S/42 being a blue rolled.
