Hi all, I am a new member currently living in Germany. I am a collector of German military firearms and have always loved Lugers.
My first Luger I had gotten as a fluke. The US military had changed the rules for soldiers owning private weapons, mirroring the German civilian rules. Owning firearms in Germany is not an easy thing and most soldiers didn't want the hassles. I was lucky enough to be at the armory on day when a contractor was asking what forms he had to fill-out to turn it in for destruction. He told me that I could have it if I could register it. It is a byf 41 in good shape. It is not matching and has vopo grips but for free it’s a great deal. I have since gotten 2 ppks and a CZ75 for the same price. The only sad thing is I missed 1 Luger that did go to destructions. |

Not really free, the price was hassle.
Curious, was registration in Germany a routine paperwork, or you have to let them take fingerprints, holding a placard standing in front a camera? Over here, I have to do both. And law requires reporting to police whenever home relocating. But I bear all. No other choice. Life. |

In Germany you have to have a reason for owning a gun, these include hunter, sport shooter, collector, and in special cases inheritance. Sport shooter takes about 2 years of documented shooting in a recognized club and you are only allowed to own weapons for that discipline. Collectors have to submit a detailed description (small dissertation) of the era and type of weapons to be collected which has to be judged by a government official as providing a historical significance. Hunters’ are allowed to own 2 handguns of hunting caliber.
None of these options are cheap. The hunter’s license, including the required course, cost about 1000 euro. The collectors license cost me about 1500 euro. On top of the fees you have to have an approved gun safe (500-1000 euro). I don’t remember giving fingerprints, just a background check in addition to the other requirements. |
