Found another Luger I might potentially be buying. Need input.
Hello yesterday I found a Mauser BYF 42 P.08 marked Luger it looks to be a "black widow" but was fitted with brown plastic grips seen on Krieghoff made Lugers... I want to say it was refinished because it looks LNIB as in zero wear and or rust that I could see. The bore was also very shiny with no traces or signs of pitting.. I was told by the dealer he bought 18 guns from an older gentleman because he was moving out of state.
It also comes with two mags one being a P.08 marked mag with black plastic base and the body of the mag has the "FXO" marking present, the second mag has the standard wooden bottom with a few markings that I can't recall. He also has a holster that was also purchased with the Luger but I believe it's a P.38 holster given it is marked as such on the back.. also someone's name has been carved inside the flap of the holster.. Well the listed price is $799 before tax but I could possibly walk out the door with it for $750 because Ive done quite a bit of business as said shop. He admits to know nothing about Lugers and thinks it's a Russian capture but there are no markings to label it as such. Also all the serial numbers are matching. So my question is does this sound like a good deal and does this sound like a R/C to anyone? He is also trying to sell a 1943 Mauser P38 for around $599 before tax if anyone cares to chime in if that's a good deal or not. |

Grab it at that price, IF the grips look like TRUE Kreighoff grips and not VoPo or Russian Capture grips.
There is a genuine 42 variation that was issued with Krieghoff grips, (see Jan Still's recent post) and the grips alone are worth almost half of the asking price, if original. |

Briefly reading over your note I want to say run, don't walk, back to the shop and buy it. The mags. and holster will cover your investment, and the gun sounds honest. This is the kind of deal that we all dream of.
Are there any X's over the numbers? Of course it would be nice to see pictures before going too far out on the limb. dju |

No there are no x's of any kind on the numbers and no import marks, the serials all match to every part and the only other marking beside the serial numbers is the proof marks, the eagle, swastikas, ect ect and of course the P.O8 marking itself. I wanna say the grips are legit they don't look like repros and there is no chip around the safety.
As for being VOPO's there is nothing on the grip they look just like these grips |

well, any nice looking P08 is worth $600, and easily $700 for a nice, unmessed looking one. The P38 holster, say $75 for one that has been cut down or messed with, $125-$200 for one in good shape, the wood mag is worth $50-$135, as with all things, it depends on originality and condition

Hi Brandon, The pictures you have posted are of the new production Krieghoff that retails for about $18,000.00. If this is the gun that is being offered to you, something is very wrong. Regards, Norm

I posted the pic as a reference that the grips on the Krieghoff in the pic above is the same grips I saw on the Luger at the gun shop I was at. Because the poster above asked if it was a VOPO.

It's a good deal, go for it. One thing i have found out about quality firearms as i have gotten older, they are money in the bank. In fact better in most cases, cd's earn next to nothing, but lugers like other quality firearms just keep going up. Where i live lugers bring a premuim and you find a good one you best buy it, it will not be around for long. You can allways make more money, you can't do that with lugers.

If the grips look like your photo then they are most likely real, (I don't recall anybody reproducing anything but Black Bakelite grips).
You cannot go wrong buying this gun!! |

Well here she is I ended up walking out the door with it for $700 for the gun, both mags, and holster. I also went ahead and picked up a repro mag to use for shooting for like $30, So I have $730 in it.

Nice Luger, I also have a BYF42 with the Krieghoff grips. What is the suffix letter of the serial number?
Thanks |

I am not sure what the suffix is, where do I look for it? I mean under the serial number at the front it has something that looks like an "L" could that be it? Also here are some pics of the original mags.
one is marked P.08 with "FXO" along with some squiggly looking lines with the number 37 underneath that. The second mag has a wooden bottom with the numbers 1516 along with some little squiggly lines that i have no clue what they are lol..... Sorry for it being blurry..couldn't get the camera to focus. |

Brandon, Your P-38 holster looks good to me..
I have a very nice WW2 period Eagle 655 magazine that would fit with your pistol instead of the wood bottom one you have. Would you be interested in a trade? Jerry
