I think it is too much. .30's are my favorite so I am stuck there but in a real gun shop (Meaning one on the street) where they have to have thing priced to sell, this should be a 700 to 800 dollar Luger I don't care how clean it is. The grips look unusual to me. But over a grand? There are nothing special about commercials to be that much, the US Commercial market accounts for half of the Lugers produced in that time frame. SO it certainly is not rare. The good thing, I find the .30;s to always run like a clock where with a 9mm and the different springs, the 9's can be finicky with US commercial ammo.

It's perhaps a $700 pistol, considering the side plate damage.

Is the sideplate really damaged? It looks to me that is where the "Germany" stamp was placed. Not the first one I've seen like this.

Also, ya'll need to tell me where I can find Commercials in this kind of condition for 7-800 bucks. I would like to pick up a couple.

Steve is right. The "dent" in the sideplate clearly shows a carelessly placed "Germany" stamp, not a blemish..

clearly looks to be where the side plate was stamped, nothing special about it to be priced that high, but knowing it's cabela's it will bring that, sooner or later.

Steve, the interent, forget it. I am talking about pawnshops that sell guns and some gunshops where they couldn't possibly sell it for this much. Oddly no one else disagreed with me. They just are not rare and are very common. I am in no way insulting you, I think buying the things on-line or even if you live near Cabella's, they are too much. But eventually people buy them. I saw a 1916 DWM here in Florida in NRA very good condition and they wanted 1,000. 1923 Commercials are just by no means rare and in a sense they represnt the lowest priced Lugers at this period in time, if you like it, by all means buy it. BUt with my experience with Lugers look around a lot. This is mine, I paid 699 for it in 2010. Nonetheless the conition of this is very good and I have never seen a GERMANY on the sideplate? Man you jusrt never know with these commercials.

Yes, I know that there were many thousand of these made and I also know that the condition that it is in is better than you normally find. Also, if you have never dealt with Cabelas the prices that they ask are just that; asking prices. I have bought a lot of guns from them and never paid the asking price. If they don't take my offer, I walk away.

Bought a Mauser ES350B(Mauser top-of-the-line rimfire from the 30's) from them last year and got it for half of what they normally sell for. I was happy, they were happy.

I looked at this gun a bit ago at Cabela's and when I went back yesterday it had sold. It was a clean looking commercial though.

It is not sold, I had them put a hold on it until I can take a look at it. In the mean time though they have listed this one:

and it didn't last long.

There was also another 1923 listed for 1399 at the Ft Worth store and it has disappeared as well as the 29/70 6 inch Swiss. The swiss was an early one somewhere around 700 serial number range and was listed for 1299.

I had #85715 and #85757 (only 42 #'s apart). They both had 'Germany' stamped on the sideplate.
I'm curious to know what the S# is on the one at Cabelas.

A good price, but I must point out that your grips appear to be reproductions. Are they marked in any way on the inside?

85704, that's interesting. Wonder if there is a pattern on where the stamps were applied.

Thanks for the S#. I'm always on the lookout for consecutive #'s. I would think the same person stamped a batch like this.

Do three examples in the same serial range make a sub-variation?

I disagree with your statements, as said above, you show me where you can get clean lugers that match for $700-$800 / I have not seen a luger at a pawnshop in many years, in fact, have pretty much given up on looking at the shoddy places. The 'average' person does not know what a 9mm or a 7.65mm is when looking at lugers, they just want a luger; it is only later that they learn that 7.65mm costs a lot more to shoot.

Gun stores, when they have lugers are even more than this.

You really must have incredible luck in finding 'cheap' lugers to make statements like this.
