Default new Luger collector question

This is probably a simple question, but I cannot find an answer to it-- Why are some Luger magazine bottoms pinned through the button and others are pinned to the side of the button? Which is the correct location for the bottom pin? Also I just received a 1918/1920 Luger for my 55th birthday from a big estate sale. It is supposed to be unit marked on the front of the grip. The markings are- "9./J.R.6.29." Can anyone tell me what this means? Thanks all.

My guess is 9th Infantry Regiment, company 6, weapon 29. Welcome aboard.
