"Whitening" Removal

I think this might have been discussed a bit back, but I'm afraid I didn't make note of it at the time. How does one go about safely removing the "white" filler (from a lacquer stick) sometimes used to highlight trademarks, proofs etc? Thanks!!

I use Hoppes #9 - works like a champ for me
