My wife of 31 years had a near death accident 4 years ago. To this day I'm still shaking thinking how close I came to losing her! She is doing much better now tho still has problems with pain and walking. I would absolutely dread the day she passes before me!

We've bumped heads over the years - but we've been married since 1982 - so we are kinda used to each other, most of the time.

We had a medical scare 15-16 years ago with a embolism in one lung, then 2 yrs ago also, she was hospitalized twice but things seem good right now.

At 82 and 80 the death do us part thing seems to be right around the corner. I dread the thought of losing her.

The closing lines of Paradise by the Dashboard Light come to mind.

I swore, that I would love you to the end of time
So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
'Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But god only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time, so I can end my life with you

I've been married for 58 years, but with 2 different wives. Does that count?

Probably. I have been married to the same wife for 58 years.
Ron

P.S. I think Vlim's post sucks.

31 years, 4 children, two dogs, a cat and numerous other small critters. I don’t do laundry or bills, we don’t carry a balance or pay late fees. We have a good life, my Mrs played a huge part in getting there. I plan on dying first.

I planned on dying first too, but it didn't work out that way. Sharon died almost eight years ago after 45.5 years of marriage. I miss her................

When my Halina passed away in 2017 my whole world collapsed and I very nearly went after her.
There is a HUGE empty part in my soul now, one which i know will never be filled, but i thank God for every second I was allowed with her.

Met my lovely wife about 3 months after I got home from Viet Nam, moved in with each other the same day and got married 28 days later (had to wait for blood tests in those days). It's almost 52 years now and it seems to have rushed by rather quickly. She's been dogged with an incurable endocrine cancer for the last 18 years and is the bravest person I know. Damn I love her.

These sobering discussions remind us all of our loved ones and to never take their presence in our lives for granted. My wife of 38 years died nine years ago. I was numb and lost for years. Eventually I met a widow. We recovered together. We are now on our third year of marriage. We miss our spouses, but life goes on. We enjoy our life together but are acutely aware of the temporal nature of a marriage. Understanding this serves to enrich our relationship and we do not take a single day for granted.

I'm always awed by couples that stay married for 25+ years. I'm naturally a student of Human Nature, and wish I'd have pursued a career dealing in Aberrant/Criminal Psych, ... Fascinating.

As a child, I always thought "some day, ... I'll find the perfect one". Somewhere in this big world the 'Perfect One" waits, ... I'm just never gonna find her at my age anymore.

I was married once (1983) for 10 yrs. Good for the first 5, not much the last 5. I would have never asked for the divorce, as we had a 5 yr old Daughter. It was my Wife's idea, saying; "wouldn't it be nice to be with someone you loved ?". Her next comment was; "I thought that you were going to change over the years !". That statement IS all telling about the differences between men and women IMHO.

As a man, I want the person I fall in love with to stay as true to that initial character so my love will remain strong. Women on the other hand, (IMHO) see a man as malleable, changeable, adaptable somehow. We all change with time, some slower, some faster. I still wonder what I'm gonna be, ... when I grow up.
