Schmeisser Haenal Magazine???

I'd never really looked hard at the magazine in my 1938 S/42 P08, just figured it was a "period" mag.

I just did. (Note: I bought 2 Mecgar mags so I'd have a few when I shoot.)

So what did I find? It says (see pics) Schmeisser and under that Haenal. Plus serial numbers: a 2, then 4993 and under that an 84.

The mag is in decent shape, but there's a loss of plating in the spot evident in the photo. It works just fine.

Clearly this isn't a Mauser mag and I read where Schmeisser made mags for Lugers. I guess this is one on 'em.

My P08 is a shooter and the Mecgar mags work just find. Is the Schmeisser mag something I should hang on to or is it too just a "shooter" and I should use it like any other magazine? What have I got?

S/Haenel mags are well made.
Your is in less than optimum condition, so I'd hold on to it and use it.

A really nice one will bring a premium- sometimes to someone who needs/wants one.

It's a police spare mag with the 2 above the serial. Don is right. Those grips seem to fit well but you might want to find some German panels. They would look a lot better.

The Haenel Schmeisser magazines are among the best ever made for Lugers.

They were made from folded welded steel that was then milled down to the exact magazine dimensions. With even extensive use, they tend to run well.

You don't see magazines made this well for even modern guns.

As your magazine has finish loss, and the Luger is your shooter, I would not hesitate using it.

During WW2, Haenel Schmeisser used the "fxo" concealment code, and the E/37 inspector stamp is found on them.

Even after the end of WW2, the East German Ernst Thalmann company (a people's enterprise) absorbed the Schmeisser works, and continued to manufacture these magazines with the 2/1001 concealment code for EG and RC Lugers.
