New to Lugers and need some advice
Was at a gunshow today and think I found a good shape 1914 DMW Navy Luger FS for $1500.00. Chamber dated. Not sure about proofs - know need to check before buying. Looks reblued and trigger not matching. Have done some research and looks like even a shooter grade Navy in poor shape is worth at leat $1500. Would this be a good buy??

Malcom,
Could be. Click on this discussion: Authenticating Imperial Navy Pistols and absorb as much of the information as you can, make notes, and examine the gun again with this all in mind. Good luck, if you buy it be sure to let us know all about it. --Dwight |

Thanks for the advice. Went back to make the offer...wouldn't you know it, guy had packed up his table. A Luger dealer I did buy a 1914 Erfurt Artillery from on Saturday said the guy had had it at the show before and likely would be back with it. Thought it was a bit pricey at $1500 and thinks can find one that would be better, but he did confirm that it is real Navy and not a fake.

Hi Malcolm:
Three or four of us Navy collectors did a year long study some time ago regarding the differences between fake and authentic Navy's. I have pictures of both and we have noted the differences. The devil is always in the details. If you have a digital camera, you can send me pictures and I would be happy to give you an opinion. Lastly, I would not take anyone's word at a gun show that a Navy is authentic. You are always better off talking to a Navy collector because they can help you fair out the good from the bad and shed some light on what might have been done to the gun. We are only expert on the model 1914. The group of us who worked on the project vowed not to release or publish our research. People making the fakes don't need to be any better at it than they already are. Navy's are great! I have two authentic ones in the collection along with a beautiful 6" Swiss that is a real eye catcher. You can reach me at my Yahoo address [email protected]. Good luck to you.
