spent cases
I can see now why my spent cases always have a dent to the side wall.

I always thought they got the dent when they hit my forehead...

Mmmm. I only get hit in my forehead when I let the front sight get high just before the shot. It then hits the target on the 7 ring at 12 O'clock. I guess the brass in my forehead is just a reminder to stop doing it like that.

I've seen slow-motion movie clips of the M14 rifle ejecting - Before the shell can be thrown clear, the operating rod smacks it in mid-air and throws it forward, instead of to the side...I shot the M14 in boot camp, and cleaning/scrubbing the brass marks off the op rod was a tedious chore... You should have brass marks on your breechblock too, I would think...

M14 & svt40
Occasionally my SVT40 will throw a spent cartridge & appear to catch the case upon closing. I've not noticed any feeding problems with my M14, although I've not examined either rifles' spent cases closely. Perhaps with reloading the 9mm, I've needed to check for damage before reuse & the marking becomes obvious.

My stainless 90s Luger karate-chops the left front side of the case. It used to gall up some material on one side of the dent in the case. I marked them for position and deduced that the case was hitting an edge of the upper's left side on the way out. (Let's say that these are not the most precision pistols out there.),and also that it was doing more than bouncing off in order to shave up a furrow of material. Examining the extractor, I noticed its claw was lop-sided--longer on the left side. I filed it to be more symmetric, and left off when it only dented the case, to the extent it can be ironed out by a reloading die. I wish I had a high speed camera to see what is actually happening in some of my pistols!
