"While production of the Luger started in the 1870’s,"
I'd sure like to find one of those 1870's Lugers. IMO, it's not a well written article at all. |

"War History Online presents this Guest Article by Tom Whiteman, long-time Luger and Walther collector and owner of Legacy Collectibles."
...???...I had thought, from various comments here over the years, that Tom was a respected Luger collector/dealer...

"Effective Military Weapons
The Luger and Walther P.38 handguns were proven effective military weapons in their time. While production of the Luger started in the 1870’s, updated versions and military advances eventually led to its demise in the late 1930’s to early 40’s." The thing to remember here is that the above quote was taken from a 'website' and as such is 3 rd party information. I don't have the book this quote was taken from so at this point it could easily be some sort of typo making its way across platforms. I have nothing but respect for Tom and unless and until he is given a chance to respond to this post I simply choose to believe its a comedy of errors and misrepresentations.

That's not the only bit of nonsense in the article...
It's riddled with mistakes and wrong assumptions. |

I get that the article wasn't well written but we all learn as we go along ... Keep in mind the website wrote this article on May 25, 2017 so who knows when Tom wrote it. How much have you learned in the last 5 years ???
Being on this site has taught me so much about the Luger and its history thanks to so many of our members. I fully agree that Vlim is most definitely one of our "true experts" but so is Tom IMO and experts do not always agree with one another. That's the fuel that keeps the engine running and knowledge evolving. We are blessed to have a long list of learned collectors here each adding to the total gestalt of our knowledge base.

Geez, that article never ends ......
But, it has some interesting photos I have never seen before. It's worth a scan. It's also a cluttered mess of poorly placed advertising which really does get in the way. |

I re-read it to see if I wasn't too harsh on it.
It's even worse than I thought. The only thing that's correct is that the P38 was cheaper to produce and the mechanical features of it are still being used. The rest is absolute, total, complete, utter crap. I am beginning to suspect this "article" is based on a short phone interview with Tom rather than anything else, then written up by someone who had no knowledge of the subject.
