Default Simson 'S' Code, $9,000

Lookie here

https://auctions.morphyauctions.com/...LOT511517.aspx

I was shocked, but pleased to see that this Simson sold for 9K - that is one of the higher amounts I've seen.

The average Simson (decent bluing, no unit marking, not an S, not a dated), they seem to sell for around $2k - to $4K

Plus for this is the S 'code' (they made Simson & Co toggles at the same time as S) - so I am not sure still if the S was for police? However, of the 105 marked S on the toggle, my 755 records have 105 S code.

Yet only 23 with known sear or sear and mag safety?

The numbers tell me that the vast majority went into service unmarked, perhaps unit buys?

Still, $9K is Krieghoff territory and maybe more. Surprised to see a Simson at that price range. Guess I'm glad to see the values climbing, as I'm about ready to list my unit marked Simson for sale.

yes, I agree Lyn. I do think most Simson go for less than that, but I am okay if they start rising in value

To me it seems odd that Krieghoffs go for more money than a Simson, as the Simson's are significantly scarcer by production numbers, unless I am misinformed.

No, you are correct - about a 1,000 less

However;

a. DWM purchased HK's go for a pretty penny
b. Simson's while actually a small contract the 'newest' ones were built several years before HK production and some 10 yrs earlier, thus more chance of being 'worn looking'
c. Simson did a lot of refurbishing, such as the 4,000+ serial number luger sold recently on Morphys, so it tricks folks into thinking there were more manufactured simson then really were.
d. Marketing by dealers, early dealers pushed how rare they were (and they did simson also) and this helped

I'll add my comment to Ed's, Krieghoff's also have the association with Goering and the Luftwaffe. There are other low production P.08's that don't reach the level of Krieghoff's (and should), namely Vickers and Simson. Although I'm OK for lower pricing as I'm still hunting a Vickers.
