Post P08 Luger Netherlands

I have been put in an awkward position by a man I work with,I mentioned I would like to buy a luger and just so happened he had one he would sell,Not being at all knowledgeable on lugers.I need some info as well as a fair offer to give him for his pistol, It seems in very decent shape, apperance wise. It is a 9mm,It has wood grips,The barrel has a four digit serial number and a crown with an N under it. from the John Walter's book on lugers we determined it to be from the Netherlands,It has one common serial number on the majortiy of parts, however it does have some small parts that are of another two digit number.Under the safty it has the word,"GESICHERT". there is no date or letter on the top of the gun,It has one clip with a wood bottom on it with the gun.I have been told from another soure via email from same description that this was a comercial gun, rather then a military gun.I would like to be able to confirm or disprove this with any help. From the best of my knowledge this is all i can remember about this gun. Thanks for any and all help

Where does one begin? You may have been misinformed about this luger by someone who also lacks the knowledge and experience. I guess one could begin by saying that this gun is NOT from the Netherlands, the crown/N is a commercial "nitro" proof. Dutch lugers had the word "RUST" stamped where the "GESICHERT" is (Safe in Dutch). On the front of the frame near the attachment of the barrel should be another full serial number, most probably with a lower case letter (the suffix) under it. If so, this gun is most probably the common 1920 commercial parabellum made by the thousands after WW1 by the Bankrupt German Government to gain revenue. The value of this piece is somewhere between $800-1500 depending on its condition. Any pictures?

Playtag,

I agree with Herbert. The 'Rust' safety mark is something that is only found on Dutch lugers and your confusion probably comes from the crown/N proof on the side of the Dutch Luger pictured in John Walter's book.

PT, I think that the above price quoted is too high for a mismatched 1920 commerical, even in pristine condition. As a shooter it has a parts value of no more than $500. TH

I see my colleagues have passed you solid advice, but all overlooked the fact that this was your first post.
