A Sneak Peek......
Hi folks.....
Well - I'm getting there, as it's been a long day re-writing code and programming on some of the Import programs... But - with thanks to many of you - I wrote some code to actually include the archives from as far back as the year 2000 into the new Forum (AND - if you used the same SCREEN NAME back then - your post count and profile includes those posts!!! !!!) - and did a test drive of some of the current posts/threads. If you want to play with your new site - just go here: http://forum.lugerforum.com/ While I have to leave for work in a minute - feel free to log in and give it a test drive - including a LOT of new features (yes - including a spell checker).... I plan on bringing the new forum on-line this weekend, as I refine the code and port it to another server... My thanks again.... John D. |

Thanks folks..!
OK - here is the "plan of attack".. Errrr - "tenative schedule" for the upgrade..... I may start it on Saturday AM before leaving for work - as it takes the importer some time to bring in all the posts, users, members, threads, etc. While I'm doing that - you won't notice anything - as this Forum will remain open to posts.... If that goes well - probably Sunday of this weekend - I'll close this forum to new posts and registrations, and make the final push on the upgrade. If all goes well (when does THAT ever happen??!! ) I should have the new Forum on-line in an hour or two - and if works the way I'm planning - every single thread and post should be pulled in with all the data intact.... As well - until it goes "live", you may notice the BETA site linked above is off-line as I add more features, forums, etc. My thanks again...! John |

John,
It seems to work well on my Mac, using Netscape, with a dial-up modem. I'll try it from my office using a PC and Explorer. May I suggest a log-out button somewhere on the top of the page. It took a while to find it at the bottom. KFS |

John,
Well done!!! Were you thinking to me when you decide to implement a spell checker? Thank you for your enthusiasm. Ciao Mauro

So, is the black-bar home page going away?

I don't think so Dwight... there always has to be a "home" page where we will have links to other resources...
Of course, it doesn't have to continue to look the way it does now... ( I am very fond of Gerard Henrotin's Luger animation ), but I believe the lion's share of John D.'s work is the advancement of the discussion forums... Maybe sometime early next year I will take a look at "refreshing" the Home Page... right AFTER I get the work finished on the Luger Blueprint CD... Coming soon (January) to a "For Sale" Forum near you!...

I sure would like to check it out, but I keep getting a "wrong password" message. What am I doing wrong?

OK! That was the trick. Hadn't been using uppercase on this forum, but need to on the new version, which looks great by the way. Did notice that not all images are appearing, i.e. my Borchardt "cleaning kit" photos show but the subsequent Borchardt photo does not. Thanks for the great effort!

Hey Ron,
Yep - I'm aware of some of the images not showing.. The problem is - for those that use the THUMB hack here - there is no way to import that hacked code under the new Forum hack/import.. For folks that uploaded without the THUMB hack - it pulls right in - as I just hook that program code into the new Forum code... I still want to play with the import code I've written - and see if I can't get it to pull "everything" in - but no promises. Worse case - folks can go in and EDIT their old post if they used the THUMB hack - or readers can click on the embedded URL..? Best to you!! John D. |

Swapping out "thumb" for "img" might bring up all the photos, but wouldn't some of them be huge and take a long time to download on dialup?

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">Originally posted by Edward Tinker:
<strong>Can you do a across the board where the words for thumb equal img?</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">Well - the problem is this.... When you use the "thumb" command for images, the word "thumb" in brackets - actually kicks off a program sub-routine. When your message is "posted", the "thumb" command is lost, and it's replaced with an internal HTML command set (alt img, href, etc...).. What makes it confusing is that a person can't enter HTML directly into a post (for security reasons) - but the hack file I wrote does exactly that on the server side... So - for example - if you go to Ron's post - and select the "edit" button for that post, there is no longer a "thumb" command. That make sense??? Anyway - I'm playing with the import code today - so I may have a "work around" - if I don't break another sub-routine.. Best to you! JD |

yes, I figured it was something like that and also thought that a command wide "search" for that field of commands was impossible, but thought I'd ask...

I like it! Thanks for all your hard work and time. I can only guess how long it takes to keep things running. Thanks again.
