Finding the Lost Pistol for my mag's
This is most likely an old and worn out question, BUT I think it is still a good Idea?
Can there be a place on this board where we can post our extra and miss-matched mag numbers, By type and style? Maybe an area of the classifieds? Just a thought, as I am always looking for a stray mag and I have a few that I have picked up over the years....... Any Comments? |

Re: Finding the Lost Pistol for my mag's
The "matching" of numbers is a hotly debated topic on this board, and there are many who feel (strongly) that attempts to find matching parts borders on fraud. There are also those who feel that there is no harm in matching a correct type mag to a pistol, and is totally appropriate, and why not have matching numbers while we're at it.
I feel there would be no problem advertising that you have an extra certain type of magazine (serial number xx) to match pistol type such and such, and if someone is interested, then they can contact you. To set up an area where the sole purpose is to swap magazines in order to get matching numbers would only represent the viewpoint of one segment of this forum, and would in my opinion be the thin edge of the wedge. It wouldn't be long before I would be looking for that number 79 take-down lever I need, and oh, what about a number 79 toggle while I'm at it. So I'm inclined to say that a separate section for this purpose would not be in the best interest of the forum as a whole, even though I personally would probably make use of it. However, you may feel free to post your personal items wanted or for sale/trade in the existing classifieds, others will act according to their conscience. Anyway, that's just my opinion... I could be wrong! |

Re: Finding the Lost Pistol for my mag's
Dok,
I wanted to add my .02 worth on this. I agree with you that there is a lot of controversy about matching magazines and I see nothing wrong with it, but there are those that do and I think we should follow your suggestion. My feeling is that a magazine can be correctly matched to a particular pistol and it would be the magazine that went with that pistol. The odds of this happening is almost like a needle in a haystack, but it does happen. Your suggestion will keep everything straight! Marvin |

Re: Finding the Lost Pistol for my mag's
Don Hallock already offers a service to help match up magazines to their correct pistols. He has a very detailed form to include all the information from the magazine, and his list includes the same.
As Marvin said, matches can be made. I have a friend with a K date Navy, and the matching mag was found on Don's list. |

Re: Finding the Lost Pistol for my mag's
I sugguest we add him as a contact for people wishing such a service. I know others may not agree, but I think we leave it up to individuals to decide. I think because of the controversy of this issue we put it to a vote of the Board of Directors. Ted

Ted,
I vote for putting Don's address on the list of contacts. I can get in touch with him and confirm he want this to happen. Marvin |

Re: Finding , Sorry about the Upset!
Well I hope I have not opened a old wound!!!
I agree with both sides of this issue, I can see an original setup being left alone, and I can see someone wanting to obtain a numbered mag for a pistol that was purchased with a mis-match. As far as a fraud .........That is a little strong. Matching up mags is far from swaping parts around, How many weapons that are in our safes can we say have all the "Original Parts"..They maybe all matching parts, but I for one was not present on the production line to watch or did I obtain a weapon right of the line in 1906!! We can only use our judgement and experience in the field that we collect to be our guide. Anyway, Too each there own. But an option of having a place to look for a mag would be a service. |

Re: Finding the Lost Pistol for my mag's
My vote would be for listing the mag matching service, and let the individual member choose. This service exists whether or not we choose to use it, so for those that do, if the BOD agrees, then the address will be found in our Links & Resources.

Re: Finding the Lost Pistol for my mag's
Dok,
I can go along with the magazine matching service on the Forum. This is a service between the parties and has nothing to do with the Forum except the listing. Any deals will be strictly between the party selling and the party buying. marvin |

Re: Finding , Sorry about the Upset!
Interesting story on Tuco's Collector's forum posted by a person that had ordered a rifle from Century Arms that had a mismatched bolt. A year later he ordered another of the same type, and it had the bolt numbered to his original rifle. Talk about a needle in a haystack. It does happen.

Re: Finding , Sorry about the Upset!
Well.... maybe
I saw the same post, and thought it was a case of wishful thinking. Remember that serial numbers do repeat, except for some of the South American contracts. What the fellow found was the bolt to a rifle that had the same serial number as the rifle in his hands. The odds are big against it being the real original bolt :-( Best regards, Kyrie |
