Anyone Experience 38/45 Sabots???

Back in the 80's one of my buddies [now deceased] had a LAR "Grizzly" [pic below] in 45 Win Mag caliber (Jim loved magnums). (It was a 45 Gov't model frame elongated to hold/chamber the 45 Win Mag cartridge). He was experimenting with 38/45 saboted loads in the 45 Win Mag cases. I don't recall if he ever got them sorted out or not. They were white Nylon sabots with four slits. He had a big bag of them and on at least one night, I helped him reload a couple hundred.

I was working on my 38/45 Clerke in a standard M1911A1 auto at the time, and never got around to the saboted cartridges. Now I'm thinking of trying a 38/45 sabot in my Colt Gov't model, just for S&G...

Anyone know of a source for just the Nylon sabots??? I can't seem to find anything except black powder sabots, and not in 38/45...

Hello,

The easy way would be to start the CNC-machine tool
and build some.
If you want I can help you in this case.

Would be interesting how that works, and how precise it is.

For awhile one of the major companies, Winchester? Was making sabot's for rifles, but I don't know if they made them for 45, not a lot of elephant hunters who want a sabot, but there might have been. Most I remember were deer rifle rounds sized down to .22

No difference between Black Powder Sabots or Smokeless Powder Sabots, either will work.

Jim was one of the guys I did the 357/44 mag conversion for. Jim had a 6" bbl S&W "N" frame that I converted. 44 Mag cases run through a 357 Auto-Mag die. Clymer ground the reamer, my Bridgeport did the cylinder reaming. I had to make up an indexing jig, but it turned out really well. I still have my 357/44 S&W nickle 8 3/8" bbl revolver...

I lost interest in magnums after firing the 454 Casull and the 44 Auto-Mag. Every joint in that arm hurt.

I may be mistaken, but I think saboted rounds for most centerfire applications were deep sixed by the anti-armor piercing legislature of some years back. That's why you don't see them offered anymore.

P, I haven't used sabots, but as an alternative, I can offer an exc bore 38/45 Gov't model barrel @$75 if you want to build up same wildcat rounds. TH

Hi Tom! Believe it or not, I make my own 38/45 Clerke barrels...I bought the reamer from Clymer some years [decades!] ago, and I also bought the RCBS dies when they were reasonably priced...I did a couple for some acquaintances over the years; still have mine...I play with it every couple years...
