Leather Care+use vs Preservation
You people are confusing two issues here.
#1. Most of the magic elixirs cited will make your leather look good and make it supple. #2. Most of the magic elixirs will accelerate the deterioration of the leather over the years and are bad as far as preservation is concerned Read the reports that have been cited...and then decide if you want to play with them or save them? http://web.uccs.edu/dmclain/conservation/hn/ The Shadow Knows! hehehehehehehehehe |

Re: Leather Care+use vs Preservation
This subject is not new, and has been through the wringer on this forum time after time. As with most everything else in this world there are differences of opinion, and it will forever remain that way.

Re: Leather Care+use vs Preservation
Most of the elixirs that are oil-based make a holster look shiny (for a short time) but, as you correctly note, have deleterious effects on the leather itself. I received a letter from the curator of the Museum of the Confederacy this week and he stated it well when he referred to leather as THE most difficult material to conserve. Fortunately, the best known methods for preserving leather AND making it look its best are both inexpensive and easy for anyone to do. Research in museums and university laboratories is arriving at some good information about what is best. One of the best summaries of the theory of leather conservation up to 1990 or so is the Library of the Netherlands web site. A google search should take you there.
