Greg Cote 10rd Magazines
I live in New York State which prohibits magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds. I own a S&W semi-auto which came with mags of more than 10 rds. NY's SAFE ACT allows for modifications to mags to restrict capacity. Some mods are well done, some are crude. The mod must be 'permanent'.
While looking at Cote's inventory, I was somewhat surprised to see that they now have 10 rd mags for 'hi-cap' handguns. I don't know all that many 'hi-cap' semi-autos, but the 59/69 S&W series is listed, as is the '92' series of Beretta's. Cote won't sell over 10 rd mags to 'prohibited' states - Only 10 round magazines or less are shipped to CA, CT (see below), HI, MA, MD, Cook County, IL, NJ and NY State (no magazines to NYC) - from Cote's site. I hadn't noticed that Cote sold 10rd mags before, and I don't think it has been posted here. I have a Luger mag and an S&W mag on order; should be here this week. Both 10 rd or less. Interestingly, the SAFE ACT in NY doesn't specifically prohibit the handgun itself, just the mag. (At least as far as I can see). https://safeact.ny.gov/resources-gun-owners#magazines I haven't bought any new handguns since Pontius was a navigator so I don't know if any gun mfgs like S&W or Beretta sell SAFE ACT complaint handguns w/10 rd mags; does anyone know if they do??? Anyway, if you live in a 10 rd state, Cote may have compliant mags for your 'hi-cap' semi-auto. https://gregcotellc.com/cart/index.php Edit: I'll compare Cote's 10 rd mag to a pre-modified S&W mag when the Cote mag arrives.

Many manufacturers list state compliant versions of their handguns and rifles.
For example, look at the versions available on this SIG P226: https://www.sigsauer.com/p226-nitron-full-size.html BTW, I think I have a couple Beretta 92 10 round magazines here if they are needed. Marc

Really? If you're a vegan, then that's a no-no...

Sheepherder, your post was informative and useful for those living in states with facist leaning legislatures.
I am refraining from any comments on the efficacy of such restrictions. Vegan? The right to eat piggies shall not be infringed! |

My parcel from Greg Cote came today, way ahead of schedule. Pics below.
I was surprised to see that the 10rd Mec-Gar mag has a two-piece body; metal on top, plastic on bottom. Not a converted 14rd S&W clone. The 10rd observation hole is the same but the Mec-Gar has a 5rd hole also. (The S&W has a 14rd hole). The Mec-Gar has an extra hole on the front of the metal body, just below a "Made In Italy" stamp. The Mec-Gar follower is shaped different and it is a bee-yitch to get the first round in. After that it gets a bit easier. The Mec-Gar comes with a golf 'T' like plastic depressor to facilitate disassembly of the magazine. Nice touch. As soon as I took it out of the ox, I tried it in my S&W 659. It went in nicely...but would not lock in place...It would fall out... I checked the mag button; it was in the depressed position when it should have been in the locked position. I took the slide off and verified that the mag lips weren't the problem, it was the 'foot' of the mag plastic base (last pic). By smacking the base of the mag hard I could get the mag button to seat correctly. I've determined that it is a very small bit of clearance in the mag button slot that is keeping the mag from seating (until the button finger is jolted into the mag slot). A quick and dirty fix would be to file the magazine body cutout so the finger would engage. I don't like that idea. Looking closely at the bottom of the plastic mag base, the 'step', I can see a sort of 'pad' where the base contacts the grip strap. I'm going to take about .005" off the 'pad' to allow the mag to engage the mag button. Now I just have to figure out how to do it...

Rummaged through my collection of old end mills, rasps, and burrs and came up with a 60 degree burr that cleared the mag body but still reached the corner of the base 'step'.
Worked OK. Not as clean & shiny a cut as an end mill but good enough. It now locks in the mag well without falling out. A field test will be necessary to confirm but it looks good so far!
