G date S/42 Grips Question
This pistol is a G date S/42 but has grips that I don't believe to be original. I haven't seen it yet but they are brown checkered with what looks like a circular metal disc inset. Would these be East German? The seller won't part with it for inspection and lives some way from me. The magazine also appears to be an incorrect wood base model. Here are some terrible photos that sort of illustrate what I mean. Should I run away from this one?

The pictures seem to be very compressed in color scale. I would interpret the grips to be VOPO bullseye grips, the light reflecting from the (relatively) smooth surface of the bullseyes going above the threshold of the bright values, thus appearing shiny. A full-on VOPO rework is a fair bet.
There's not necessarily anything wrong with that, if its the kind of Luger you are looking for, particularly if it is cheap. If you are looking for something else, I wouldn't recommend the trip. --Dwight |
