Great writing!!

Sometimes, it's weird that a lot could jump from $1000 directly to $4000. One example was a VL&D early small ring sold a few months ago. The hope was simple: no one wanted it, I would steal it at $2000, adding BP and shipping, $2400 maximum. "What?? Four ?? ......" no time to ask her "why did it jump??", she's busy. Probably two seal bids went above $3750.... that's the only reasonable possibility. The lot was a little bit too hot. But that's a plain gun, I would find a better one, no problem, giving up was easy. Sometimes, it's not very easy to give up an item. After all, if someone can pay $4000 on a pistol, he can do $4500 as well, if he can do $4500, he can also do $4750, the costly iteration can go on for quite a few cycles.

For fun: try to keep silent when she asks "will you do [fill in a number]", don't answer, so you can estimate how many people are bidding on it (without your bidding, if price still goes up quickly, that's not a good sign... too many bidders). In many cases, the real starting price is already out of range.

[Edit] Have not acquired any gun in 4 months, life is becoming boring. Almost decided to buy a Ruger Ranch Rifle to consume the leftover ammo, but find the magazine was not even 10, it's 5. God, who designed this....

Two smaller auction houses are also interesting.

In Manchester, NH
http://www.amoskeag-auction.com/

In "Orange County", CA
http://www.cwocauctions.com/

Not necessarily being great in price, but they did sell some nice items in the past.
