Portuguese Navy and RP

There seems to be some confusion between the id marks on the this two Portuguese Parabellum. Which one is the Royal Navy...the one with the crown and anchor, or the one with the anchor and the RP(Republic of Portugal?!?!) letters ??

Portugal gave DWM a contract for 1000 Lugers. The first deliveries had a crown and anchor on the chamber. Before the contract was filled the dictator was overthrown. Thereafter the Lugers delivered had R.P and anchor. I have one of each of these Lugers. See Stills book

You mean the King...not the dictactor ! The dictactor came after...on the RP period !

So, of the three variations, the M2 and the Crown&Anchor are the first ones, belonging to the Army and Navy. The RP&Anchor is the later one. Am I right ?? Which one is the rarest ??

King,Dictator whatever---then there is the Banner GNR--then then the byf 42, and ofcourse the M2 army. I have all five including rigs for the army models. Wonder what is the lowest ser no R P anchor known? Mine is 639. Crown Anchor is no 125. Anyone out there have other ser nos to share?

King and dictator makes a diference, since there might be some confusion on "The Luger Story". There's an obvious diference between a crown a RP, don't you think ?? The same mistake is on "The Luger Handbook"...it just doesn't make any sense a gun from the monarchy period featuring an RP and the same gun from the republic featuring a crown...it sounds like a bad joke !

What Stills book do you refer ??

I was just using a figure of speach. I kinda get tired of hair splitting on this forum. I am by no means an expert on Portugese Lugers---but I do have 5 of them and a fairly extensive library. I just mearly tried to briefly comment on the anchors. Now for those of you who don't have these Lugers--I refer you to the following: The Luger Book By John Walter Page 231-233, Lugers at Random by kenyon Page132-137,Third Reich Lugers by Still Page 197 and 254. Then if you still want more go back a way: Look at these---Luger Variations by Harry Jones Page 102, The Luger Pistol by Datig Pages 10,35,70-71,86-88,163,183,256,285,286,290,295, 296. Then you might look at Luger Tips by Mike Reese II[notice the II, gotta be correct] Pages 48,49,50,51. If you are not tired of research by now then look at the Guns and Ammo 1971 Annual Article by the master Ralph Shattuck, Page 279. Now I'm sure there exists many more written references to the Portugese Lugers---This is just all I have in my little Library. Now to my earlier question: anyone have the crown and R.P. and what are serial numbers. Oh yes, there is at least one Portugese that I don't have--only 50 produced, you guys research which one[or more] it is. Where could I buy one and is it fake? How can you tell if you don't have one or have never seen one? Post Script--Look at Luger:The Multi-National Pistol by Kenyon page 112 and 178. While you are at it also see World of Lugers by Costanzo page196,197,336.

Doug Smith brought in a few of the rarer examples of the Portugese contract Lugers a year or two ago. A friend bought one of each, but at the moment can't tell you which two variations it was. I think at the time they were virtually unheard of in the US.
