An excellent example (of a reproduction, that is ...).

vlim, how do you recognize that as a reproducion?

i have a snail drum here, i use it for shooting.
but i never found out, is it a repro or is it an original

best regards

There are several giveaways. The easiest one is to add up the individual digits of the serial number: if the sum equals 17 it is a repro.

Speckled rust drops are artificially created. Also the numbering style is typical for these repros.

Hi Gerben, What I find troubling about this drum (which looks like a fake to me, too), is that the serial numbers do not add up to 17, they add up to 20. It may be that this simple method of fake recognition is no longer valid.
Regards, Norm

1 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 7 + 7 = (still) 17

Looks more like a 1 that was abused to look like a 4.

I agree. My first look seemed to indicate a 4 but after enlarging the image it is clear that it is a 1 with a line struck through it...it isn't even a complete 4. Obviously an attempt to foil the "17" forgery giveaway.

Hi Gerben, You were right, I sharpened up the photo and it's quite plainly a 1 that's been doctored to look like a 4. My apologies to you, sir.

Norme, no apologies needed!

It is interesting to see how these repros will evolve into 'real items' in the years to come

They are already did - judging by going price on this side of the world at least.
