Help
I just purchased my first P 08. It is an all matching (Except for the mags) byf 41. Is there a site that will have more info on the serial #'s, etc. Any help is appreciated.

Help
I just purchased my first P 08. It came with what appears to be an original holster, no waffenamt, but does have S.O. 81 stamped on the back, also on the front someone used an awl and punched in a name and the serial # of the gun on the top flap. It also came with two mags 1 blued FXO with one of the knobs broken off, the other is an unblued wood base. What do I have?? Any help is appreciated.

Welcome. Might be polite to either have a name in your postings or in your profile.
I combined the two postings, as I thought it might make it easier to help you. Pictures would help a lot, as you haven't given us much information to help you. Give us info" Serial number? Proofs on the right, etc. Right now, we can say you have a 1941 mauser (byf is the code)...

Thanks for the quick response. Sorry about the name, I thought it showed up from registration. The serial # is 6591 O (the O is cursive). It has 3 waffenamts on the right. Beneath one is the # 655, beneath the second is 355, and nothing beneath the third. On the bottom of the barrel near the chamber is the serial # again and below that is the # 881. The holster is the hard shell type and appears to have had a stud (now missing) above the strap on the flap. no waffenamt, but does have S.O. 81 stamped on the back, also on the front someone used an awl and punched in a name and the serial # of the gun on the top flap. Beneath the flap on the outside body of the holster is the # 9511. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello Will, welcome to the Luger Forum! You have a Mauser Military Luger, which is known from the byf German Ordnance Code. The serial number 6591o was completed about February of 1941. The inspection marks, called Waffenamt Marks, found on the right side of the receiver are both Eagle over 655. The 355 you mentioned is probably from a bad strike and is actually 655. The third mark is a firing proof mark and is an eagle over swastika.
The magazines shipped with the Luger would have been similar to the plastic bottom magazine you have except it would be marked 122, instead of fxo. Also the bottom would be aluminum and marked with the pistol serial number on the bottom. One would contain a "+" to indicate it was a spare magazine. The holster is most probably a Police Style, but pictures will help confirm this. Hope this helps a little. |
