A little help with shot grouping... <img BORDER="0" src='http://boards.rennlist.com/luger/pic.gif'>

I took my "new" 1937 S/42 to the range this weekend and put 50 (115-grain Winchester) rounds through it using an original Type 3 Army magazine. I'm happy to report that it fired all 50 flawlessly - no jams, no misfires. As you can see from the photo below, I was able to keep the grouping pretty tight at 25 meters (I'm blaming the ungrouped shots on sheer excitement!). However, all rounds went below and to the right of center. Is this just operator head space and timing? Is it possible to adjust the sights to "zero" the weapon? I was able to walk the groups closer to center by compensating my sight picture. Any shooting tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Take care...Denny

Drift the front sight to the right! Live with the shots hitting low, or shot 124 gr ammo! Thor

Thor, I'm not sure what you mean by drifting the front sight to the right. Does that mean twist the barrel to the right, and does that tighten or loosen it? I've never replaced a barrel and I'm not sure how they attach. Also, are 124 grain 9X19's common? Everywhere I went (WalMart, Outdoor World, local gun shop) carried only the 115 grain. Also, since I've had no reliability problems with the 115 grain, should I mess with a good thing? Thanks....Denny

Sorry about that Denny, I would stick with your ammo and live with the group printing a little low. I am sorry I wasnt clear when I said to drift the front sight right. what this entails is getting a soft punch, brass, wood, nylon, or a steel punch with something soft between it and the front sight and using it to tap over the front sight to the right side within it's dovetail groove. If you do this at a range having an extra person to help hold the gun helps. you need to make damn sure the gun is safe and the action open or better yet take the top off the frame to do this. a gunsmith can do it too but he will do it at a shop and you can do it at the range and check it by firing another group and making a second or third adjustment as needed. Sometimes these front sights DONT move easily and then the gunsmith is probably the best idea at least to get it moving so you can drift it over at the range. Care to be safe, not mar the finish or grips is important also. Good luck, and congrats on your Luger! ~Thor~

OR, make a mental note that 10 O'clock second ring will put you dead center. I have a Frontier Colt with fixed sights that also shoots dead on at 10 O'clock.
