Default Portuguese M2 Crests

I have been studying the Portuguese M2 and came across something interesting in the shape of the M2 crests. There appears to be at least 3 distinct dies that were used in the production.

Thanks to forum members I have obtained two very good pictures of two the types and hope that someone might provide a detailed picture of the 3rd type. This should appear in the later higher serialized guns above about SN 3000. There could be a couple more out there also where the crown almost touches the M2.

Over the last couple of years we have discussed several crest variations where only slight changes had taken place, as collectors we want everything nice and tidy and consistent but it appears that when it comes to Luger Crests we need to come to understand that several variations might exist concurrently and all be correct.

Hope you find this interesting

Vern,
My M2 #3803 looks like your first photo... top left. It has 28 lines inside each leg of the M, as apposed to 21 lines, second photo, top right. The crown is more angular also. There are some subtle differences though.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Mike!

The different crests seem to be intermixed, I guess this could be multiple assemble lines doing production at the same time, this was a fairly large contract.

I still think I see 3 to 5 variations and hope members will post pictures of their guns crest for us to see clearly.

In general there has been very little research done on Portuguese Lugers, there's lots still to learn. Thanks for sharing!
