Default Mag capacity help

I am going to get my 1920 9 mm Luger Wedneday(The one with Mauser engraved on the top of the toggle, serial 5343f). In the meantime, I need some help. The magazine that is in the pistol is original, but not matching. For some reason the numeral 7 is engraved on the mag and shows bright through the magazine finish. I want to buy a couple or repro mags for shooting, but all I can find are 8 round capacities. Am I missing something, is 8 the correct number, aside from no reason at all, why would a previous owner engrave "7" on the mag? Am I nuts or am I nuts, and since this a dream of a lifetime getting a Luger, any help will be deeply appreciated not only by me, but also by the Mrs. Thank you for your courtesy and time.

All luger rounds are 8-round magazines

Some magazines have a 7 on the spine to signify that the magazine is intented for use with the 7,65 para round (.30 luger). You see this sometimes in countries where the 9mm catridge is not allowed, nor are the 9mm magazines. This is a bit of a problem for the luger, as the same magazine can be used for both calibres.

I personally find that unless I force them, that 7 rounds fits much easier than 8 rounds...

Besides what vlim said above

Sports shooting limit over here is 5 rounds (6 for military pistol competitions), which is a good number for P08 shooting

Thank you Vlin,

I have a 7.65 caliber 1920 Commercial Luger with two matching magazines. Matching in the fact that they both have been modified with wood (walnut) blocks and brass top ends restricting the magazine capacity to five (5) rounds.

You have solved a mystery that I have had for years. The Luger magazines were modified for sports shooting.

Wesley..wondering what the correct round count is because I want to buy some repro mags to use while shooting.

Buy MecGar repro Luger mags..they seem to be the best. If you cram 8 rounds into a magazine the mag will fit too tight ..the round at the top will have little spring compression against the bolt and will be very difficult to lock into the pistol without undue force.
As Ed and Gerben have indicated..7 or less will bring more ease and comfort for range plinking.

Right. The fewer rounds loaded in the magazine, the higher the chance of the toggle action working properly.
