Default Regimental Markings, Why When and Where?

According to Jan somewhere between five and ten percent are unit marked. There are over 100 unit markings. They are very handy for tracing a lugers' battle history and to what unit it was provided! Now my lawyer questions! First when and where were they applied? At the factory or in the field to keep track of an individual units property? Were the regulations as to the application and numbering. I have included 2 war heros one with and one without! Because of the unit marks George traced its' history>

Eric, Görtz & Bryans' German Small Arms Markings should answer most of your questions.
