New Reno Gun Show Look ???
Looks like the Reno Hilton will have a $ 1.8 BILLION new look :
http://www.grandsierraresort.com/ Anyone know the status of the future of the Reno gun shows ? I suspect room rates will change a bit from the $ 59-$ 79 rates from the recent past. |

Pete, either this is wishful planning, or just a quick cosmetic upgrade as when I was there at the March meeting, nothing was going on construction wise. The place looked the same.

Hi Doc,
The Sierra Development group was to take over the property from the Harrah's group on June 1, 2006. Hilton sold it to Harrah's a while back. I think the project is serious...may take several years to complete. It is more than just a cosmetic redo...budget is something like $ 1.8B (Billion...). The casino will be moved to a new building outside of the tower complex to attract the residential condo buyer that does not want to walk through a casino environment. Once the property is redone, there will be rooms to buy, rooms to buy on a time share, and rooms on a daily hotel basis...all of which mean the $ 59-79/night rates will just be a thing of the past. All of this remodeling while keeping the property open and taking in income... The lake they now use as a golf driving range will be converted to a water-park feature... |

Howard, I'd settle for a hotdog and a rootbeer.
I wonder if they will continue to host the gun shows?

I attend a week long conference there every year. The Hilton had everything you needed right there and it was priced at a level that the average Joe could afford. The mini mall downstairs was more than adequate. The buffet was priced right, plentiful and had an excellent selection. The Mexican restaurant and sandwich shops were good and priced right. After reading what the new owners are going to do with the place I wonder if I can afford to go there anymore.

Darn all this "progress" (read MONEY for the developer)! Will this effect the upcoming August show? Will the "Great Reno Show" have to be moved to a different venue?

Hi Doc,
The August Reno show has not changed; not sure what will happen from then on especially if the exhibit hall rental rates get too high. Entry fees might just go up for the public. I stayed at the "new" property last week for 2 days...the $ 59-79 room rates now seem to start at $ 109/night. No visible changes (i.e. improvements) with the new ownership, yet. But the Lodge buffet went up to $ 16.00/person for dinner. |

THIS is progress? At $109 a night for the room, at least they can make the water handles turn in the correct direction!

Does the Forum Group still gather for dinner? My daughter will be visiting me from Hawaii and I'd like her to see that not all gun folks are red necks (just most of us)!

Lodi Jim, the dinner group should be there. Pete Ebbink used to organize things but he is not going. I would suggest finding Russ Withem's table and start from there.

According to their website, the Reno show is contracted to the current venue through the year 2017.

Just got back from the Reno show. It was very well attended, the aisles were packed. While there I watched several advertisement blurbs regarding the immediate and future plans of the new owners: Sierra Investment Company. Apparently several new high rise buildings are scheduled to be raised in the parking areas surrounding the main building plus many satellite town house structures. It is tilted towards the younger well healed couple who desires a home or vacation base in Reno. They were careful not to mention the prices in public. There will be major changes occurring very soon. I have no idea where we folks will park. They have already doubled most prices. I was told that Lou Fascio has a contract to keep running the gun show through 2017 and not 2007 as Dwight has said. It will remain to be seen how this will happen. Many lugers made their presence at this show. Unfortunately I forgot to pack my camera in the frenzy of my last minute decision to drive to the show instead of flying, in case you weren't aware of Thursday's events at airports.
