Please can you help identify this P08?

I have inhereted a P08 from my deceased uncle and was wondering what info you might be able to give me about it. First all serial numbers match. On top of the barrel in front of the breach block is sthe number 1940. On the top of the forward half of the toggle bar is the number 42 in line with the barrel axis. On the right side above the slide rail are two markings both the same. They have three horizontal lines with what looks like an x in the center. Both have the number 655 below the marking. Also to the right( toward the muzzle) there is what appears to be a German eagle. This is also on the round portion of the barrel just forward of the tapered portion.

Thank you for your help in learning about a very unique and beautiful weapon.

Wayne, welcome to the forum! Yes, we'd like pictures and full serial number, to include suffix on the front of the frame. However, i can tell you a lot from the info you gave me;

1940 is the year it was accepted into service
42 is the code for Mauser, who made the luger in 1940

Eagle 655 is the proof and acceptance markings

Thanks for the fast reply. I have done a little research on the pistol and thought that it was a Mauser made piece. The serial number is3786, with no letters as a prefix or suffix. I also forgot to say that on the front of the frame, just below the barrel is what looks like a cursif small case e.. And the magazine has a aluminum base on it. Overall finish is good with just the normal wear marks on the left side behind the take down lug. And the ejector spring is colored brown. Unfortunately, the pics I took are too big to send . I will take new ones in a smaller size soon.

Sounds good, I used to have a 1940/42 but traded it.

I like to take the pics large and crop and then resize them, but do what is best for you

Try taking a picture of the 'e", you should have one just below the serial number on the frame too.

Does the magazine match the gun? Many times they do not.

Hey Ed, no the serial number on the mag is way off, as is usual from what I have learned. One of the things that I would like to know is if this one is a collector or a shooter. Also, do you know if anyone makes a modern holster that would fit it? I will try to get some pics and edit them for the forum .

Hi Wayne, let me add my welcome! If your suffix is indeed an "e", then one more bit of information is, it was completed about June 1940.

I'm looking forward to your pics!!

There's original holsters on ebay all the time. However IMA militaria has them. Galati international is another source for reproduction holsters and takedown tools.

Thanks for the reply about the reproduction holster. But I was looking for a modern holster for the P08. I got one from Michaels of Oregon, (model 81052) yesterday. I needed one that was left handed and all the original design ones are right handed.

I believe that CMR in the UK has reproduction holsters in a left hand version... but check with them directly...
