m23 v 08 v lahti?

Hey there fellas,

New to the interesting world of Lugers from a collectors perspective (have been admiring them for some 2 decades).

I enjoy collecting Scandinavian firearms but have to date stuck exclusively with rifles (which is about to change). I was wondering if someone could treat me to the differences between a m23 Finn and a 08? Extra thanks and kudos if someone could fill in the Lahti too.

Dear Mr. tacfoley,

Although I agree with most of what you say in your post, I think you're a bit off on the accelerator. This feature was retained on the Husqvarna M/40; I believe the design simply would not work without it.

Tom, The original 1923 purchase from DWM was for 5,ooo lugers with 7.65x98mm barrel and LPO8 stocks. I would guess what the "08" refers to, is either these guns rebarrelled to 9mm or the many other military surplus 9mm lugers that ended up in Finnish military use. These were usually marked with the "SA" to show army ownership. TH

I think that what Tom (neoinerian) means is the difference between the generic P-08 (German designation) and the M-23 (Finnish designation), of which there is essentially none.

The SA stamp was applied beginning in 1941. I would have to WAG Speculate that Finnish pistols which were not so stamped (there are quite a few) went out of Army service before then, were privately owned, or simply did not go through an armory at an appropriate time.

I was looking for a substantive difference between the m23 and an 08, though thank you for the input regardless Lugerdoc.

Tom, The only major difference between the M23 Finnish lugers and the standard PO8, is that the Finns were commerical production and numbered in that manner, with fewer parts actually numbered. TH
