Without a shadow of a doubt, the P38. I've never had any of mine jam, while the lugers have been only partially reliable, even with the proper ammo.

I think they are both a wash. The P38 has better sights and the Luger is more inherently accurate. I can hit targets about equaly with both.

I've fired an Artillery but never a Carbine. The initial question still remains which gun I would bet my life on? The P38, hands down, for reliability, dependability, ease of loading, safety of carry, an external hammer, decocker/safety, etc.

I must agree with you. I checked with Chalie Kenyan and there are '42' seperate and distinct pieces. Too much can go wrong. Especially in the field. The togle is a truly vulnerable linkage. My Kreighoff is a work of perfection as are many of the upper end models. It appears more customs luger produced by Krieghoff than any other. Looking at a Browning for instance. It is clearly better proteced from the elements as are the revolvers. Why is it our FACINATION!!! Because they are timeless works of art. Way Cooool! Copied but never surpassed. One day I will fire my first luger But it will be someone elses!!

Once I got the correct springs for it, and learned how to handload for it, my P-08 byf 41 has fired almost 3,000 rounds without a single jam. My Luger is accurate!!!

My byf 43 P-38 has never been an accurate pistol. It cracked its frame, some time ago, with slightly warm ammo.

Let the experts speak for themselves. There was a joke in the Bundeswehr regarding their P-1 (P-38) that went like this..."8 warning shots and one well aimed throw".

For killing at close range, please give me a .45 1911.

I'd feel safer carrying a round in the chamber with the P-38. If I ever had to use it it would be two shots at 10 ft. Extreme accuracy is moot.

+1. At the distances you would typically shoot, a quick shot is more important than a super accurate shot. In a self defence situation you won't be able to use the accuracy at it's full potential anyway. If you want to, the P.38 can be carried with the hammer down on a loaded chamber, ready to go without fumbling with the safety. My bedroom gun is a Beretta 92FS, a direct descendant of the P.38.

But I'd probably take the P-38.

I think there is more recoil on the p-38 that the Luger.If you
like less recoil I would go with the Luger you can get it back on target faster.

Did they ever produce a P38 using a longer barrel? I'll have to did out my Buxtons. They is produce a silencer. Buxton page 217

The only other variation I could find! They see a lot more rugged but I still like Lugers above all!After further reading both short and long barrels were produced with the different manufacture.
