1940 Luger What do I have?
I am hoping there are some Luger experts on here that can help me determine a value of this Luger. This pistol was found in a cabinet in the shop of a relative who died recently. The pistol is in very good condition and as near as I can tell all numbers match. There are 2 magazines that seem to be original but I have not verified that yet.* The holster is in very good condition, looks to be original based on the markings and is complete the a tool.
Any information about the value of this Luger would be appreciated. Thanks |

Hi Robert, and welcome to the forum.
Looks like you have a complete Luger rig in original condition. Your Luger was manufactured by Mauser in 1940. "gxy" is the German military concealment code for Gebr. Klinge, Lederwarenfabrik, Dresden- Loebtau who manufactured the holster in 1941. There is a fair amount of discussion about the meaning of the asterisk symbol on the barrel. Some say it's a reject / rework mark. Others think it indicates that the barrel was Czech made. Please post clear sharp pictures of the bottom and profile of the magazines. As to my valuation estimates... The original finish coverage looks to be about 90%. With two matching magazines the pistol is probably worth $1800-$1900. The original holster is worth $200. The original tool is worth $75. If you're insuring it, check some of the online dealers like Simpson Ltd and checkpointcharlies.com. They will show retail replacement values. Marc

Thanks Mark. Lots of good info. I think we will be selling the pistol once we figure out a fair price. This is the first Luger I have ever had in my hand.

Marc, Robert said he had two 'original' magazines, so it might not be two 'matching' mags.
Robert, to be matching, they have the same serial number on them, with a + on one and the other none. So, value would be closer to $1200-$1500 or so, perhaps more for extra magazine and holster. The higher value with two 'matching' mags Ed

If you have 1 or 2 matching mags then you will get top dollar selling it all together as a "rig". If your mags don't match, you will get highest dollar by selling the items seperate. Gun, holster, tool and extra mag all seperately.
