Best Luger Book {-s}?????

1} If you could only have one Luger reference book, what would it be and where do I get it?

2} Assuming you already have {1}, what is the second book you would buy and where do I get it?

I just got The Luger by Walters, it is very good, and also bought Gibson's book. Both excellent. My favorites are Jan Still's Books, as they show lots of guns.

But probably the main thing is to decide what era you are interested in and what type?

For overall, as Russ said, Kenyon is a good one, lots of pictures, plus info. For specific era's, then Jan's books.

Look on-line at used book stores for many of these, also E-bay, but they'll rip you off there. Jan has recently reprinted two of his 4, 3rd Reich Lugers is available, and also Axis Pistols, this fall he will reprint Weimar Lugers.

For sources, check the "Links" section of the left-screen menu. Several of the larger online Luger dealers have the books as well.

It is possible to get a good deal on Luger books on ebay, but know how much you can buy them for at retail before you bid.

An inexpensive way to get started is to download and install the Luger E-books by Gerard Henrotin... they contain lots of good information and great photos and illustrations.

I would recommend that you get the one on the Luger mechanical features first... The last time I checked, they were about $8 or $9 each. The link to find them is in the Links & Resources page from our home page (lugerforum.com) whose link is at the bottom of this page. The fine Luger animation on our homepage was created by Mr. Henrotin who is also a member of our forum.

The one luger book that has the widest distribution, since its been around for 30 years, is Kenyon's "Lugers at Random". But since it is now quite dated, Jan's Still's 3 volume set of Luger books, has the most detailed up to date information. Any of the others mentioned will also provide additional data, some of which may conflict with others, but if you read them all over the next 30 years, you will then be qualitifed to say "no body really knows about that for sure". Heinmot, the one I use the most for identification of markings of all types is Costanzo's World of Lugers but it's an expensive son-of-a-gun. For general reference, Lugers at Random.

Where can I get a copy Of Jan"s "Third reich Lugers"? I understand he has reprinted it, but all I can find are used copies at outragious prices. Thanks for the help.

My first Luger book was Kenyons Lugers at Random.
I then started trying to obtain an example of every gun in the book.
I have not succeeded yet, although I am now a lot poorer.
Good gun books are worth thier weight in Lugers.
I have never seen a secondhand Luger book sell for less than its original purchase price in this country, depending on condition of course.

That book is available in this country for $24.95 do a couple of searches on the title... you will find it. I am not in my office at the moment and don't have my references...

But the book that Dwight is talking about is Die Pistole 08... and I haven't seen anything about it being available in English...
