1920 commercial police?
Hi to all! Well, I went to a gun show this weekend and although there were not very many guns of any type, I did spy a decent Luger and promptly set out on a quest to buy it... At first glance, it was pretty un-remarkable, but the condition was nice and the visible numbers matched so I did my best Monty Python haggling and walked away with it for a fair price..
By the time I got back to my table I was already feeling pretty good about my purchase, and it can be described as follows: Basically, it is an 1920's alphabet commercial serial 9765 r factory DWM with no import marks, and a 4" original 9MM barrel. there are crown N on the receiver, barrel and breechblock. It has a sear safe and a magazine safety, and is numbered in the commercial style. The side plate is, of course, modified for the sear safe. but it is also numbered in the military style along the the commercial style original number as well? And, the rear toggle pin is numbered. All else standard commercial, no police stamps or other depot marks anywhere? Now the last, but not least feature item, is on the lower front grip strap it is marked: S.M. 239. and that is it? The Luger came in a re-purposed artillery holster with a police crown S tool with another serial number, and a standard fxo mag for a spare... Probably just as it was all the way thru WW2?... Anyway, you grip strap gurus pleas let me know what the grip strap markings might mean? Best to all, til....lat'r.....GT... |

Very nice, G.T. Batches of police and military alphabet Lugers were made and they seem to have been provided more often from the later suffix letters. I'd say you did quite well and have an interesting alphabet Luger.

orphan?
Hi to all, you know, I'd seen this Luger at several shows, and I think the holster being so rough, people thought it was a thrown together rig, and an ugly one at that... So, every time I walked by, it got to looking better and better... So, I finally asked the vendor for his most friendly sale price and with that, the orphan police P.08 came home with me! With minimal cleaning and inspection that I was pretty confident it came back just the way it was presented for sale.
After I got it home, and cleaned, and the holster repaired by Luger holster repair! I rigged it back up and it now hangs from my book shelf! A neat old luger rig that found a home just like the scraggly old dog I referenced in an earlier post!...... I'm plenty happy with it, and I can't say that about too many deals in my life!..Best to all, til...lat'r....GT... |

Bought via the commercial market it is marked in the commercial fashion and once it came into police inventory in the later 1920's, it received exterior serial marking as seen on army pieces.
It received a sear and mag safety around 1934 (?), and a few years later the mag safety was decided it was not worthwhile and vast majority of them were decommissioned (safety) Ed
