I "believe" the carbine was 8mm as it was being developed during the war.... It was a prototype sn4 and it sold at Butterfield in the 6 figures....

The toggle-action carbine was one of the two projects that Georg Luger was working on during the few years after he left DWM up to 1923. The other was a machine pistol based on the LP 08. General Manuel Mondragon�´s gas cylinder self loading rifle, the Flieger SL Carbine (Mondragon Rifle 08) had not been a success and most military authorities in Germany and Switzerland thought that the future lay in developing the toggle action. Luger�´s toggle action rifle was considered too dangerous as the toggle opened too close to the soldier�´s face.The machine pistol was 9mm and the rifle took the standard S- cartridge ((8x57 mm). There was a similar, toggle action carbine prototype, that was made by the springfield armory around the same time. The toggle was much more compact with flat ears, and I assume similar internals... I wonder how well they worked?

Dok - the pictures came from old German magazines, so I would think that they�´re yours if you want them. The Luger carbine drawings are from Georg Luger�´s personal documents - and I�´m sure he wouldn�´t mind. Patrick

DOK, The luger carbine prototype was posted by Butterfield's auction site in 1999. I have no idea if they would be upset, however the auction is so old that it is no longer listed on the site... FGR

Is an excellent book...
The photo's are outstanding - as well as documenting some facts that he challanges Kenyon about. The photos are well worth the price for the book alone, IMHO...
Oh yea - I bought my copy (new) some time ago from Ray Rilings in PA (highly recommended!). Don't know if they have additional copies still??? |
