g date magazine question
On the luger I just picked up, the mags that came with it are marked 2839 f + de63 and the other is marked 2557 f + de63 and the gun is marked 3032 f, is it not strange that I have magazines from the same block so close togeather? or is there some reason that maybe the armory switched the mags in some inspection or another service type mix up? I take it that the mags which are both nickle plated and marked with the same proof marke de63 are both g date luger mags. thanks for your hlep

Hi Ed, my best guess would be the previous owner spent some time collecting two magazines that were as close to the pistol serial number in the proper suffix letter. You are fortunate to have two as close as they are. Be happy someone did the extra work for you!!
Would you please let me know the serial number of the pistol? |

the pistol serial no is 3032 and it has an what I think is an f on the front of the frame, it is the only place that has the suffix letter. from what I have read that is correct. it came with a 39 dated holster by carl busse. waa 286 and de63 take down tool. I say f it is a strait line with a curl loup at the top and a horizonal slach under the loup in the center of the letter. same on the magazines. am I correct in saying that the + is for extra mag? If any one has an de63 3032 f mag they want to trade let me know. I guess I would have better luck at the lotto counter. but you never know

Ed,
* You might want to contact Marine Kabar (Greg) thru the "Private Message" icon in the following thread. http://forums.lugerforum.com/lugerfo...c;f=6;t=000251 * While not an exact match, I'm inclined to believe you might be interested in his dE mag. Maybe you two will want to work a mag trade. Respectfully, Bob |

ED, I recent sold dwe/63 G date mag #3033f to another forum member. I guess close only counts in horseshoes & hand gernades. TH

Is it totally accurate to call such a magazine with "f" suffix s/n a "G" date magazine? Wouldn't the chances of it being from a 1936 dated Luger be pretty high? I thought the serial number range for "G" dates ended at the "e" suffix with _maybe_ just a few of the "f" suffixes known to exist. Ot am I overlooking something....I'm new to this so please bear with me :-)

the luger is a g date and is serial no 3032 f double de63 and the take down tool is de63. I dont know how to tell if it is f serias from 35 or 36,, maybe some of the more experianced collectors can give us some insite? thanks and if the buyer of the 3033f mag wants to trade I have a couple of f serias de63s we can talk about.

Greg & Ed,
* Per Jan Still, Third Reich Lugers, Pg. 27, "G" date Lugers occupy the S/N range of 930a-5000f for a total of 54,070 examples. Further, Jan's S/Var 2, which is a dwE63 marked "G" date, is said to occupy the S/N range of 5000d-5000f for a 20k total. * Ed's S/N 3032f Luger example is prima facia evidence of a "G" date appearing in the "f" block. * From an extensive S/N list of reported Luger pistols, only three (3) 1936 Chamber dated P.08's are recorded before the 5000f S/Number. Thirty-six "G" dates are recorded in this 1f-5000f range. It appears "G" dates are, for all practical purposes, solid up to 5000f with the few 1936 exceptions noted above. As this was a transition, please note about eight "G" dates are reported after the "f" block. * A review of Don Hallock's mag listing(s) reveal only one Type 1-nickle tubed/Aluminum base-Mauser Military-dE63 accepted magazine reported in the "G" date pre-5000f range that was issued with a 1936 chamber dated Luger(mag#=4260f). * Ed has partial pictures of his "G" date mags shown at http://www.gunboards.com/luger/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3012. * Based primarily on the above, the bright bodied, dE63 accepted magazine S/N 3033f was highly likely an original issued "G" date Luger mag IMHO. Respectfully, Bob |
