Post Hold open latch operation

Hi Group,

Which parts on the mag are supposed to actuate the hold open latch?
My 1917 DWM will not lock open with the mag inserted.

With the mag removed, I can use my little finger to raise the rail from the top - while holding the toggle open. The toggle will then rest properly on the latch and stay open.
(I can't imagine trying that after the last-round )

One additional detail, the mag does not 'pop' free from the well when pressing the release. I have to pull it down when pushing the button. It does have an audible click when inserted - but maybe a bit snug the last quarter inch?

I would appreciate info on what-makes-it-work, and ideas on what to do.

Thanks,
Fritz.

Fritz,
The magazine button actuates the hold-open. It is not unusual for the magazines of Lugers to fit snugly in the magazine well. They were not designed to be "drop-free" magazines at the time they were built although some will. Some magazines that will work in one Luger will not fit in another.

I've learned that with a Luger its best to insert the magazine slowly with the magazine release putton pushed in, the tight fit precludes a quick insertion and this will save wear on magazine and release, they tend to bind if forced quickly. The Luger is definitely not a "stick it in / slap the bottom" like a .45 or M16. Tolerances are too tight

Hello,
Your magazine may either be deformed around the top loading area or the magazine body itself may be twisted out of alignment. The crimped sheet metal bodies are bad about twisting. They get loose in the crimping! Try another magazine.
It has been my experience if everything is "right" the magazine will drop out when released.
